Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD)

Status: Implemented

The Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) is a non-destructive testing device used to evaluate the mechanical properties of pavement layers. The FWD was used on Subbase, Road base, and Asphalt layers for quality control of compaction and to validate the modulus used in the pavement design.

FWD drops a weight which simulates the load pulse of a moving vehicle and subsequently measures deflections in the pavement structure.

The FWD allows the contractor to ensure that all results meet the design requirements. The equipment delivers immediate and repeatable results, enabling on-site decisions to be made promptly.
