Early Thermal Cracking Control (ETC) for concrete structures in Qatar remains a major concern, particularly for structures with high demand of water tightness. Considering the significance of the water leakage in underground structure and the rising of groundwater table in Qatar in the recent years, the Public Works Authority (ASHGHAL) has set a criteria to control Early Thermal Cracking for Highways and Drainage Structures.
The impact of thermal contraction, drying and autogenous shrinkage, can lead to excessive tensile strains and results in cracks in the concrete. Therefore, an increase in reinforcements may be required to satisfy Early Thermal Cracking (ETC).
Highway Projects Department projects:
the latest requirements for Thermal Cracking Control were applied in All HPD projects. A Notable project example where ETC was used is Project Al Bustan South.
