Compaction is one of the most important activities  in pavement construction process which will impact the short and long-term performance (e.g. rutting and crack resistance) of the pavement layers, therefore it is crucial to monitor and control the compaction process. The conventional method includes establishing a  compaction procedure during site trial (e.g., compaction sequence, pattern and number of roller passes) with the attempt to  implement it during pavement construction by the paving team.  

Intelligent (Smart) compaction is an innovative method  used in the construction and quality control of pavement materials in some countries worldwide, such as Asphalt, Subbase and Subgrade . It involves the use of specialized equipment/system installed in the rollers and in some cased mobile/tablets. For example, GPS, accelerometers, infrared thermometers for Asphalt mixes and onboard computer with color coded IC map. 

This will allow real time monitoring, control the compaction process and maintain a complete and continuous record of  the number of roller passes and rollers locations, asphalt temperature and  compaction measurement. (In term of stiffness).
